Watch your drinks, police warn people who hire escorts in the Lower Mainland

Surrey Police are warning people hiring escorts to be more diligent after receiving several reports of drugged and robbed patrons in the Lower Mainland.

Surrey RCMP say there have been ‘several instances’ of people hiring an escort online, meeting at pre-arranged locations in the area, being drugged and waking up to find their stolen personal effects.

“These events are of concern as they pose a high risk to the health and safety of those drugged with unknown substances,” a statement from Surrey RCMP said. “If you have been drugged, it is strongly recommended that you seek immediate medical attention.”

Police say that if you choose to meet strangers as escorts, they recommend:

• Maintain continuity of any food or drink you consume to ensure it has not been spiked

• Do not consume anything provided to you by the other person

• Don’t use drugs or alcohol that may interfere with your ability to stay safe

• Tell someone you trust where you are and who can contact the police if you don’t show up at a specific time.

Police say they believe there are likely to be more victims who are reluctant to report, but encourage anyone who has been the victim of a similar incident to contact police in their jurisdiction.
