Panthers equipment staff prepare for training camp

CHARLOTTE, NC (CHARLOTTE SPORTS LIVE) — Even before the first snap of the season, there’s already a group of Panthers striving for perfection.

“We just want everything to go well,” Carolina equipment manager Don Toner said.

But it’s not that simple for him and his team. This time of year, that’s never the case.

“It’s never perfect. You can always improve,” he said.

The goal?

Move everything from field gear and office supplies to sleeping pills and protein bars from Charlotte to Wofford for the start of training camp.

“We started ten days ago,” he explained. “Today is the last day.”

During that time, 13 moving trucks have backed into the bowels of Bank of America Stadium, where dozens of Panthers staffers are ready to pack; the trainees too.

“That’s how they all started,” says Toner, who celebrates 27 years with the franchise. “We have a lot of people starting with us and progressing.”

As you can imagine, organizational skills are crucial. Luckily, Toner says they never left anything behind.

“When we travel, we want players and coaches to get to their places and go to work.”

When the last box closes at BOA, the 71-mile journey begins. When the movers arrive at their destination, other personnel are ready to unload.

“The requests have increased, but so have our staff, so we also have more help.”

And by the time it’s all over.

“Today is good,” Toner says.

Only then will he breathe a sigh of relief.
