Now, a new invention can detect a fortified drink and could help potential victims avoid sipping a dangerous substance.

Michael Abramson has his fortified drink in a bar.

“You wake up the next morning with no memory and you start to think about what could have happened,” he told CBS 2’s Alice Gainer. “It’s literally like you’re instantly drunk but fine. drunker than you ever thought possible. “

Doping can leave victims helpless and incapable.

“It’s a vulnerability drug and one way to make people vulnerable is sexual assault, but it’s not the only way,” said retired police officer Eugene O’Donnell.

We know that criminals use drugs to steal, humiliate and kidnap their victims. It can happen to anyone anywhere. Nearly half a million people are drugged each year in bars, clubs and college campuses, according to the Justice Department.

“It’s sort of an ideal drug to facilitate an almost perfect crime, because it takes the victim who would usually be your best witness, takes them off the board.” They are not able to give you a reliable account, ”O’Donnell said.

Abramson was lucky. He was rescued by a friend before his situation worsened. The incident led him to invent Drink Savvy, a line of cocktail mugs, straws and stirrers capable of detecting the presence of a drug.

Drink Savvy products can detect the presence of the three most common date rape drugs; GHB, Ketamine and Rohypnol.

Many people have told CBS 2 that they are taking precautions to protect their drinks, but Abramson hopes his product will make them even safer.

“The more people we can protect, the more we can secure everyone, the better,” he said.

The price of the product will be similar to that of other cocktails. Abramson hopes to expand its line of products that will be offered in restaurants, bars and college campuses in 2014.
