The 52-year-old newscaster was talking about his health on his podcast when he said, “I drink too much.” “I think about that, mostly in terms of why I drink too much,” he said. Before bursting out laughing, he said, “And I’m probably what people in the sobriety community would call a ‘norm’ but hard drinker. I drink a lot. And I really think that’s not always for the right reason.” The podcast launched in July seven months after he was fired from CNN. It’s described as “a candid, unfiltered conversation from his living room couch” in which Cuomo “talks about his own mental health issues, the stigma behind antidepressants, and the importance of therapy.” Cuomo admitted he drinks “too much” and continued, “I think it’s to calm my mind. I think it’s to deal with emotions.” “I’m not saying I’m an alcoholic,” Cuomo added. “I don’t think those terms should be abused, but it’s something I’ve had to think about, and it’s something I think about and it’s something I deal with because my Mental health has become a growing aspect of my personal concern for how I can be my best. I truly believe that, you know, where your head is, is where your life is going.

Cuomo has had a difficult year since he began facing pointed questions about journalistic ethics to help his brother Andrew, the former governor of New York secretly helped craft the PR to fight allegations of sexual harassment. The presenter was CNN’s highest-rated prime-time host before he was fired in December 2021. A move that cost him nearly $15 million in salary he would have earned had he fulfilled his last contract . He is currently embroiled in a heated legal battle with the cable network and has demanded $125 million in damages, alleging that his former company “has a long-established habit and practice of selectively enforcing its policies based on cynical calculations of public perception”. He recently signed a contract to host a show with News Nation at a massively reduced salary of around $1 million a year, one-sixth of his CNN salary.
