Community alert: BPD warns against drugs


BPD community alert: The Boston Police Department is warning patrons of area bars and clubs about the dangerousness of odorless, colorless, and tasteless drugs such as Rohypnol, also known as roofie, placed in the drinks of unsuspecting victims. Other drugs commonly used in a similar fashion are GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid) or ketamine. These drugs and substances can cause disorientation, confusion, temporary paralysis or loss of consciousness, and a host of other symptoms, leaving the potential victim vulnerable to the suspect’s intentions.

While the BPD encourages everyone to look out for each other when gathered in social settings by creating a ‘buddy system’ to avoid breaking up, there are steps you can take to keep yourself safe. personal:

  • Make sure your drink is served directly by the bartender or your waiter. Don’t allow people you don’t know or trust to order drinks and deliver them to you.

  • Monitor your drink at all times. Never leave your drink unattended.

  • Take your drink with you to the bathroom if necessary.

  • Keep your hand covered over your drink when you’re not looking at it. There are many creative inventions that can help you cover your drink.

  • Test your drink with test strips or nail polish that glow a certain color if they detect drugs.

  • Get help right away if you start to feel dizzy, nauseous, dizzy, or strange in any way.

Please be aware of any unusual behavior on the part of you acquaintances and beware of strangers who attempt to lure individuals away from their friends. Additionally, if you observe someone who appears to be in distress, wandering alone late at night, or dressed inappropriately for the weather, be sure to contact the police immediately.

On November 22, 2021, the City of Boston Licensing Board issued the following notice regarding safety concerns and best practices in nightclubs and other licensed establishments:

The primary goal of the City of Boston Licensing Board is to ensure the safety and security of customers at all of our licensed premises. In recent weeks, local, national and international news organizations have reported an increased number of reports of illicit and non-consensual drugs in bars, nightclubs and other nightlife venues. Specifically, there has been a reported increase in cases of fortified or “covered” drinks.

The Council is therefore issuing this opinion to remind license holders of the obligations and good practices in terms of user safety:

  • It is the responsibility of each licensee to operate a business that is safe for its customers and free from illegal activities.

  • Licensees should establish security plans, whether or not they are formally required by the Council. Security plans should include an overview of operations / security at licensed premises, locations of security cameras, training policies and procedures, and policies and procedures regarding the identification inspection, dispersal of customers and the handling reports of illegal activity.

  • Licensees should ensure their employees call 911 to report criminal activity or serious medical emergencies such as drug overdoses or severe impairment.

  • Licensees should call 911 or otherwise notify police to report suspicious or predatory behavior and when a problematic or severely intoxicated customer is deported.

  • License holders should make it clear to all managers, employees and private contractors that they are expected to cooperate with police officers, government officials and investigators following a reported incident.

  • Licensees are recommended to install functional and properly maintained surveillance cameras mounted to show customers entering and exiting authorized premises, entering and exiting washrooms, as well as a position to cover blind spots, entrances , exits, service areas, corridors, stairs and dance floors. Licensees must retain video recordings for at least 30 days and must immediately provide recordings to the Boston Police Department and the Board of Directors upon request.

  • Licensees must ensure that all employees are adequately trained for their position. This training should include safety training for security staff that includes techniques for defusing potential violent encounters and difficult situations and alcohol awareness training for bar staff. All staff should be trained to recognize and prevent sexual assault.

  • License holders should post information in prominent locations reminding clients of how to protect themselves and encouraging clients to submit to drug testing if they believe they have been the victim of a drug incident. This information should include, among other things, a reminder to customers not to accept drinks from strangers and not to leave any drinks uncovered or unattended. Additional information to be published may include knowledge of non-medical indicators of a medicated drink, such as a change in color of a drink, dripping ice cubes, excessive bubbles, or the hazy appearance of a drink.

Failure to comply with any of the previously issued orders or notices above, currently in effect, the Rules and Regulations of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and Commission, and the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts relating to the sale and the service of alcohol will result in disciplinary action by the board, including, but not limited to, the immediate suspension of any license issued by the board.
