32 winter cocktails and hot drinks to warm up with this cold season

It’s not an easy drink to make, but it’s guaranteed to impress any holiday party guests who love winter gin cocktails. “Named after a street not far from our bar, The Granite Street Sour is a tribute to the rich granite history of this area,” says Sam Nelis, Bar Manager at Gin Lane Bar in Montpellier, Vermont. “This cocktail is a play on the contemporary classic Trinidad Sour. We use our barrel-aged Tom Cat Gin made with raw honey. Beyond the dash, Angostura bitters can also be used as spirits! Its flavors scream winter with its strong notes of cinnamon, cloves and other baking spices. Orgeat is a nut-based syrup, and we use the most sustainable pecan compared to the original almond. This cocktail offers warm, comforting notes of creamy vanilla, oak and roasted pecans, accented by the wintry spice of Angostura bitters. These flavors blend so well together that we should write them in stone. Granite stone, of course.

1 oz. Tom CatGin

1 oz. Angostura bitters

1 oz. fresh lemon juice

1 oz. orgeat with pecan nuts

Ingredients for the orgeat with pecan nuts:

226 g pecans (or other nut)

742 g demerara sugar (or raw sugar)

3⅓ cups of water

9g cinnamon sticks

¼ g star anise

1g whole cloves

8 g ground allspice

¼ tsp. rose water (⅙ oz)

¼ tsp. Orange tree Flower water

¼ oz. Cognac

Preparation for the orgeat with pecan nuts: Toast the nuts and spices in the oven until golden brown. Don’t burn them. Leave to cool a little. Pulse in a food processor; you want a chunk and powder variation and everything in between. Mix with the sugar in a saucepan, add water and other ingredients in addition to rose water, orange blossom water and brandy. Gradually heat until simmering, simmer for 10 minutes. Stir all the time. Let cool and rest overnight. Strain through cheesecloth or lay cheesecloth over a flat perforated pan with another pan to catch the drippings. Add rose water, orange blossom water and cognac at the end. Keep refrigerated.

To make a cocktail: Add all ingredients to a chilled cocktail shaker, shake for about 30 seconds, strain into a coupe glass.
