• 2 oz. dark rum
• 3 ounces. ginger beer
• 1/2 ounce. lime juice (optional)

instructions
Fill a tall glass with ice cubes. Add the rum, then pour in the ginger beer and lime juice. Stir with a teaspoon. Garnish with a lime wedge.

14. French 75

It sounds like a sparkling effervescence, but seems to be deceiving. The French 75, with gin and champagne, is full, all the more dangerous because it is delicious to drink.

Ingredients
• 2 oz. London dry gin
• 1 C. very fine sugar
• 1/2 ounce. lemon juice
• 5 ounces. Brut champagne

instructions
Shake the gin, sugar and lemon juice with crushed ice in a chilled cocktail shaker. Strain into a Collins glass half full of crushed ice. Complete with champagne.

13. Boulevardier

Negroni’s winter counterpart is Boulevardier, a whiskey cocktail invented for American expatriates strolling through Paris at the turn of the 20th century.

Ingredients
• 1 1/2 oz. bourbon or rye whiskey
• 3/4 ounces. Campari
• 3/4 ounces. sweet vermouth

instructions
Mix the ingredients with ice in a mixing glass until cool. Filter into a cut glass. Garnish with an orange zest.

12. Bloody Mary

Oh yes, you can and should make your own Bloody Mary mix. It takes a lot of work, of course, but it’s highly customizable. You can decide how you want the horseradish to play with the citrus fruits playing on the heat of the hot sauce.

Ingredients
The mixture

• 1/2 tsp. tomato juice
• 1/4 inch horseradish, chopped
• 1 C. Worcestershire sauce
• pinch of celery seeds
• 4 dashes of hot sauce (Tabasco, Tapatio, etc.)
• 1/2 lemon juice, freshly squeezed
• 1/2 lime juice, freshly squeezed
• a pinch of sea salt
• pinch of black pepper
• 1 tbsp. Vodka
The beverage

• 2 oz. Vodka
• 6-8 ounces. Bloody Mary Mix

instructions
Combine tomato juice, horseradish, Worcestershire and celery seeds until smooth. Add the hot sauce, lemon juice, lime juice, salt and pepper, then mix. Adjust the mixture depending on how spicy, salty or lemony you like. Add 1 tbsp. vodka to stabilize the mixture and keep the juices fresh, then blend. Mix 6-8 oz. of the mixture with 2 oz. of vodka in a glass with ice. Pour 3 or 4 times in another glass to mix, then garnish as you see fit.

Ingredients
• 2 oz. London dry gin
• 2/3 ounces. Lime juice from Rose

8. Mojito

Ingredients
• 2 oz. White rum
• 1/2 ounce. lime juice (fresh squeezed)
• 1 C. very fine sugar
• 3 mint leaves
• a soda or soda

instructions
In a small Collins glass, crush the lime juice with 1/2 to 1 tsp. very fine sugar. Add the mint leaves, crushing them against the edge of the glass, then fill the glass 2/3 full with crushed ice and pour in the rum. Pour into the squeezed lime shell and top with club soda or seltzer water.

7. Manhattan

A Manhattan is strong in every way. The flavor is deep and unabashed, and the ABV is nothing to mess with. It’s a mainstay of the cocktail, and not for the faint of heart.

Ingredients
2 oz. rye whiskey
• 1 oz. italian vermouth
• 2 dashes of Angostura bitters

instructions

2 oz. bourbon or rye
• 2/3 ounces. lemon juice

4. Dry martini

Technically, a classic martini should be made with gin and served very cold. Order it agitated, not shaken. Sorry, 007.

Ingredients
• 1 oz. dry vermouth
• 4 oz. Gin
• Olives or lemon zest

instructions
Fill a metal shaker with crushed ice. Pour in the dry vermouth, stir briefly and strain (this can be discarded). Add the gin, then stir briskly for about 10 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with olives or lemon zest.

Ingredients
2 oz. bourbon or rye whiskey
• 2 to 3 dashes of Angostura bitter
• 1 lump of sugar (or 1/2 teaspoon of loose sugar)
• Club Soda

instructions
Put the sugar in an Old Fashioned glass. Wet it with Angostura bitters and a little club soda, then mash it. Add a large ice cube and the whiskey. Stir, then garnish with an orange zest.
